In Manchester, UK, Cargill partners with the English professional rugby union club Sale Sharks to offer nine schools and around 300 children nutritional education and tag rugby sessions.
The programme combines a range of classroom and rugby activities delivered over a 6 week period by Sharks Community Trust coaches. Subjects covered include: healthy eating, the importance of a balanced diet and the need for regular exercise, using real life examples of professional rugby players and what they need to eat and drink to help them perform at their best. At the end of the programme, the children, and also their families and teachers, have a better understanding of healthy eating and the importance of engaging in physical exercise. The program culminates in a festival of rugby at the Sale Sharks stadium, which Cargill volunteers attend along with teachers and children from all of the schools involved.
