In 2016, Mars agreed on new Health and Wellbeing commitments to be deployed in the next 5 years. In 2016, the company reduced the fat content (1 and 5%) of enrobing bar chocolates across Europe. In total, in 2016 Mars chocolate reformulation reduced the intake of the European consumers by approximately 190 tons of fat including 130 tons of saturated fat.

As a key element of Mars Health and Nutrition Strategy, Mars’ product renovation programme initiated in 2007 has as its main goal to continue improving the nutritional balance of key products in the snack food portfolio.

The recipes reformulation of Mars products will contribute to a lower energy intake by its consumers and as such contribute to their overall energy intake reduction and reduce the risk of calories overconsumption.

  • From 2002, Mars has removed 97% of added trans fat. All products are below 0.5 g trans fat/100g of products and most of them are below 0.2g.
  • In 2009, nougat bars (Mars, Snickers and Milky Way) have seen their SAFA content reduced between 15 to 20% versus the previous recipes.
  • In 2011, Balisto biscuits bars have seen the SAFA content reduced by 30%
  • Mars had removed 3,000 tonnes of saturated fat from the European diet per year and replaced this with unsaturated fat (sunflower oil)
  • At the end of 2012, a slight reduction of the fat content (from 27,9g to 26,7g) in the chocolate covering Snickers, Twix, Bounty and Balisto bars, lead to a total fat reduction of 1,7 billion less consumed calories across Europe.

At the global level, Mars is committed to offering a range of product options, including sugar-free and low sugar options with the Wrigley gum portfolio. Mars will continue to educate consumers on the oral health benefits of chewing sugar-free gum.
